The 2024 salmon return at Carkeek Park has begun! And with the salmon come the salmon surveys. Thanks all volunteers who have helped out already this year whether that be the pre-survey stream flagging work or the surveys themselves. We’re fortunate to have many enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers helping with our programs.
This year started off with a splash following the heavy rains that allowed salmon easy passage through the creek. Fingers crossed the rains continue to usher salmon into the system and allow them to get past the beaver dams. Speaking of beavers we were a bit surprised to see a salmon 1000 feet up the stream past all the dams. This was a bit of an outlier as most salmon were found below 600 feet which is typical for this early in the season. This year we’ll be sure to keep a close eye on the salmon distribution to see if they’re getting past the dams.
